A Queen's Crown
Hair is an important aspect of black women’s identity, culture, and history. It is not just a matter of aesthetics, but also a medium of expression, empowerment, and resistance. Black women have faced discrimination, oppression, and violence because of their hair, which has often been deemed as inferior, unruly, or unprofessional by dominant standards of beauty. However, black women have also used their hair as a way of reclaiming their dignity, celebrating their diversity, and honoring their heritage. Hair is a symbol of strength, creativity, and resilience for black women, who have created various styles and rituals to care for and adorn their hair. Hair is more than “just” hair for black women; it is their crown.
